ANTICIPATORY ACTION (AA) AND DISASTER RISK REDUCTION FOR RESILIENT COMMUNITIES

Strategic Pillar: Proactive Protection of Livelihoods, Assets, and Dignity Before Crises Escalate

In line with IAIDI’s Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) commitment to responsible, inclusive, and sustainable development, Anticipatory Action (AA) is embedded in our interventions as a cross-cutting strategy to shift vulnerable communities from reactive crisis response to proactive risk management. This approach safeguards women, youth, IDPs, persons with disabilities, and smallholder farmers in the communities where we work and other fragile contexts from the compounding impacts of climate shocks, conflict, flooding, drought, and market disruptions.

Core Principles of IAIDI’s Anticipatory Action Framework
Grounded in ESG, IAIDI’s AA model ensures:

  • Environmental Stewardship: Interventions prioritize climate-smart solutions that reduce ecological degradation while building resilience.
  • Social Equity: Actions are designed by and for vulnerable groups, ensuring women and youth lead preparedness and recovery.
  • Good Governance: Transparent triggers, participatory planning, and accountability mechanisms build community trust and donor confidence.

In addition, IAIDI promotes anticipatory action and disaster risk reduction (DRR) to help vulnerable communities prepare for, withstand, and recover from adverse emergencies affecting livelihoods and food systems in Nigeria. The organization supports early warning systems, climate-smart agriculture, risk-informed planning, community preparedness, and resilience-

building interventions that reduce vulnerability before crises escalate. Through partnerships with local authorities, humanitarian actors, and communities, IAIDI strengthens adaptive capacities, protects productive assets, and promotes sustainable recovery pathways for women, youth, smallholder farmers, and displaced populations in fragile and conflict-affected settings.

IAIDI's interventions are deliberately planned activities during our projects implementation include;

Essentially, IAIDI’s Anticipatory Action is not just disaster prevention; it is a vehicle for dignity, agency, and economic transformation. By acting before crises, we protect livelihoods, uphold the rights of women and youth, and ensure that climate shocks do not reverse years of development gains in Northern Nigeria’s agrifood systems.

AA for food security and nutrition

IAIDI recognizes that predictable shocks including climate extremes, conflict, disease outbreaks, and market disruptions are major drivers of food insecurity and malnutrition. Rather than responding after crises occur, IAIDI institutionalize Anticipatory Action (AA) as a core approach across its humanitarian, recovery, and development programmes, enabling vulnerable communities to prepare for, withstand, and recover from shocks before they become emergencies.

Using climate and weather forecasts, early warning systems, food security and nutrition surveillance, market intelligence, and community-based risk analysis, IAIDI implements timely, evidence-based interventions to safeguard lives, livelihoods, and productive assets. Priority actions  are embraced to anticipatory cash assistance, shock-responsive social protection, climate-resilient agricultural inputs, seed and livestock support, fisheries and aquaculture interventions, home gardening, nutrition-sensitive agriculture, water resource management, and livelihood protection measures.

Special attention are given to pregnant and lactating women, children under five years of age, adolescent girls, women-headed households, persons with disabilities, older persons, youth, and other vulnerable populations who are disproportionately affected by food and nutrition crises. IAIDI strengthen maternal, infant and young child nutrition (MIYCN), promote healthy diets through social and behaviour change communication, support diversified production and consumption of nutrient-rich foods, and improve access to essential nutrition services through community-based platforms.
